Concerned over reports of Sri Lankan government considering removal of land and police powers from the provinces prior to the elections in the Northern Province, India’s External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid has telephoned his Sri Lankan counterpart GL Peiris and also raised the issue of 26 Indian fishermen who are in detention in his country while seeking their early release. PTI reports according to official sources, the conversation also focused on the elections that are to be held in the Northern Province with Khurshid expressing his concerns regarding media reports referring to some consideration being given to removal of land and police powers from the provinces prior to the polls. PTI had reported Kurshid had urged the Sri Lankan Government not to take any step in the light of its own commitments relating to the 13th Amendment and their expressed intention to build upon it.

Speaking at the same, UNP MP Ranjith Maddumabandara urged people to join the Island wide campaign against the electricity tariff hike on the 21st of this month. Despite concessions announced, the Opposition and trade unions have threatened to take to the streets on the 21st of May, unless the government withdraws the new electricity tariff by the 20th of this month. However, certain trade unions of the state sector have vowed to boycott the campaign.

United National Party MP Karu Jayasuriya convened a separate media briefing in Colombo today. Parliamentarian Jayasuriya expressed these sentiments on the Northern Provincial Council election. 1300 Karu Jayasooriya 17th

The UK Coalition Government is under pressure to prevent Sri Lanka attending a Commonwealth event in Glasgow, Scotland, designed to commemorate the start of the First World War. Campaigners say Sri Lanka should not be invited because of its alleged appalling record on human rights, but the UK Government has refused to rule out asking Sri Lanka, soon to take over as chair of Commonwealth countries.

The Herald Scotland reported that after next year's Commonwealth Games, a special service will be held in Glasgow Cathedral, followed by a wreath-laying at the Cenotaph. Programme director of Amnesty International Scotland Mark Bevan urged the UK Government to consider whether it is appropriate to invite Sri Lanka to the event.

The Scottish Media outlet quotes Bevan as saying, "It's somewhat ironic that there will be a Commonwealth-related event focusing on the human cost of conflict when Sri Lanka will probably be chairing the Commonwealth."

Issuing a release Managing Director Leon Clement said that while Dicyandiamide or DCD has not been a food safety issue, there has been speculation and misinformation about milk powder in Sri Lanka.

Citing that independent and internationally accredited testing laboratories have carried out many tests on New Zealand milk powder, Fonterra said it had been established that New Zealand products were 100% safe. Fonterra added that the low level of DCD detected in a few milk powder samples in New Zealand last year, were 100 times lower that the intake guidelines established by the European Commission.
