Norwegian entity suggests low cost power solution for Sri Lanka

A Norwegian establishment has tabled a proposal suggesting Solar power as a low cost power solution to the country's power issues. Issuing a statement, the Ministry of Power and energy made lucid, the proposal was discussed during a recent meeting between the ambassador of Norway and the subject minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi. The statement read, the issues concerning power in the country was discussed at length during the meeting.

Europol arrests Sri Lankans connected with human smuggling racket

Europol has reported that 18 people mostly Sri Lankans, were arrested in joint police raids in Britain and France on suspicion of involvement in a human trafficking ring that smuggled South Asian immigrants into Britain. In a statement released last night Europol said the police, who were also assisted by German officers, seized computers, documents, mobile phones and "a significant amount" of cash in today’s dawn raids. Europol said the immigrants, who were mostly Sri Lankan nationals, paid around 5,000 Euros to be smuggled into Britain via Germany and the French Channel ports.

The Ravana Balaya organisation has demanded international intervention over a Japanese liquor advertisement which uses the Sigiriya Rock Fortress as its backdrop. Secretary of the organisation Ven. Iththakande Saddhatissa thera stressed authorities tasked with protecting the heritage site must intervene immediately. Condemning the advertisement as derogatory, the Ravana Balaya Organisation threatened to take to the streets if relevant authorities fail to intervene in the matter.

Kelaniya Pradeshiya Saba Chairman injured in clash

The Chairman of the Kelaniya Pradeshiya Saba clashed with another this morning. Police said both parties sustained injuries and are receiving treatment at the Kiribathgoda Base Hospital. Police suspect a quarrel at an event in Kelaniya led to the fracas. The injured are not in a critical condition and the Kiribathgoda police is investigating the incident.

Second Sri Lanka Youth Parliament to be in session today

The second Sri Lanka Youth Parliament will be in session today. The inaugural session which will be attended by President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be held at the Main hall of the Youth Service Council in Maharagama. 412 members have been appointed to the Youth parliament which includes 335 parliamentarians and 77 Senators. The senators were selected through an interview process. This includes 13 Cabinet Ministers, 13 Deputy Ministers. Meanwhile, the office bearers including the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Opposition Leader, Leader of the House, Chief Government Whip, and Policy Organizer were sworn in before Minister Dullas Alahapperuma in Thulhiriya yesterday. A workshop was held for the Youth parliament in Thulhiriya at which the members were educated on Parliament traditions, etiquette and the significance of the Sri Lanka Youth Parliament.

Special bus service for Vesak

The National Transport Commission has taken steps to launch a special bus service in lieu of the Vesek festival. The special bus service which will see the deployment of additional Inter-provincial buses today, will be in effect, till the 27th of this month. The NTC has also said, buses are instructed to depart upon all seats being filled. Meanwhile the Commission added that strict action will be taken against those who charge higher bus fares among other discrepancies and authorities assured the Commission's hotlines will be active 24 hours a day.

Illegal imports amounting to over 40 million, seized by port customs

Illegally imported goods amounting to over 40 million rupees have been seized by the Port customs. Director of Customs Maali Jayasinghe said, the consignment consisted of three container loads of footwear, lighters and gloves. The goods have been strategically packed under the guise of importing material for an apparel factory. The customs suspect the racket has been in operation for a ling time. Director of customs said, the illegal goods were concealed in a manner which does not come under detection of the customs scanners. Containers in question were opened yesterday evening under heavy protection of the Police Special Task Force. No arrests have been made thus far and the port customs are conducting further investigations.

Opposition leader wants CID to stop questioning UNP members over alleged NGO meeting

Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe has requested the Speaker of the house to intervene to halt the continuous questioning of a group of members of the United National Party by the CID. Speaking in parliament the UNP leader revealed the members were being questioned over an alleged discussion with a non-government organisation.

Citing that the questions are based on suspicions that the NGO had ties to the LTTE, the Opposition Leader assured his party members have no ties with the terrorist organisation.

Ranil Wickremesinghe warned that if the speaker does not intervene, the party will seek solace in the highest International forum. In response, Deputy Speaker Chandima Weerakody said the matter will be brought to the Speaker’s attention.

India to deploy new ship bordering Sri Lankan waters

The Indian Coast Guard is to deploy the newly commissioned ship ‘Vaibhav’, the third in a series of 90-meter class offshore patrol vessel in the Gulf of Mannar and up to the international maritime boundary line with Sri Lanka. The Times of India reported the ship will be deployed to safeguard the maritime interests of India. The ship is designed to carry one helicopter and five high speed boats for search and rescue. An official said besides law enforcement and maritime patrol, the ship is also capable of carrying pollution response equipment to combat oil spill and similar maritime accidents.
