The Department of Railways says it has obtained a total of 5.8 million rupees in fines imposed on commuters who travel without purchasing a train ticket during the past year. Speaking to NewsRadio a spokesman of the department said, the money has been obtained through 8,700 such cases, with most incidents being reported along the Colombo- Anuradhapura and Colombo-Kandy railway lines. Those who travelled in first and second class subsequent to purchasing 3rd class tickets have been fined. The Department also says more raids will be carried out on railway travel.
